Eco-adventure around the lake of Khao Laem
(Kanchanaburi - Sangkhlaburi)
The Khao Laem dam, situated at the west of the country and close
to the Burmese
border, is not only one of the biggest water reservoir offering
to Bangkok
its drinking water and its electricity, but also a place of
leisure, adventure
and unity with the nature, in the region of Kanchanaburi.

Programme A : The Kwai
River and Sangkhlaburi at the Burmese border
Day 1: Bangkok / Kanchanaburi / Kwai River
07.30 Departure from Bangkok in the early morning. Along the way, a stop to the Damnoern Saduak floating market is a quite inevitable visit even though a lot of tourists meet there every morning. A noodle soup or grilled bananas will be the opportunity of a contact with the merchants in wooden canoes.
11.00 Continuation toward Kanchanaburi, with a stop to the military cemetery of World War II allies, then to the famous bridge of the Kwai River. |
13.00 Thai lunch at a restaurant on site.
14.30 In the afternoon, departure by vehicle to Namtok, then stop in Wang Pho. Get aboard a train for 30 minutes throughout the mountain with spectacular landscapes. Arrival at Takhilen, transfer by vehicle to the pier on the Kwai Noi River, close to Saiyok.
17.00 Board a wooden canoe to join the hotel upstream of the Kwai Noi River. Check-in and rest in a floating house.
19.00 Dinner at the restaurant, then Mon and Burmese traditional dances show. |

Day 2: Kwai River
/ Sangkhlaburi / Khao Laem lake
08.00 After breakfast, departure in dugout in the
mist of the early morning to join the pier, then continuation
by vehicle toward Sangkhlaburi which is populated of Thai,
Burmese, Karen and Mon. Visit of the Hellfire Pass, and
free time at the Hindad hot water source for a moment of
recreation in the eddie |
12.00 Lunch at a restaurant in Sangklhaburi or picnic
near the cascade of Kreang Kravia.
13.30 Route toward
the Burmese border and the 3 Pagodas Pass where the Thai and
Burmese checkpoints are. Impressive passage on the longest wooden
bridge of Thailand to reach a Mon village, inhabited by Burmese
refugees who have fled the oppression of the SLORC.
15.30 Visit of the Wat Wang Wiwaekaram occupied by Mon
monks. Also visit of the Chedi Luang Phaw Utama, which is crowned
with 6kg of gold and is the more venerated area of the monastery.
17.00 Continuation toward Thong Pha Pum, then the lake
of Khao Laem. Check-in in one of the floating houses on the
lake.
19.00 Dinner and night there. |

Day 3: Khao Laem
lake / Eco-Adventure Activites / Kanchanaburi / Bangkok
07.30 After breakfast, departure by long tail boat
for the discovery of the lake in the early morning.
08.30 Transfer by local vehicle to the camp in order
to be present for the bathing of the elephants. Discovery
of the countryside with a trip on board of a cart pulled by
bulls to a Karen village. Departure for an elephant ride of
more than one hour in the jungle and the mountain. Upon arrival,
get on board of a bamboo raft for a descent of the river,
that is with the exception of some rapids a great moment of
leisure in the middle of the tropical forest.
12.30 Lunch picnic during the activities.
14.00 Back to Kanchanaburi by vehicle at around (17/18.00),
then Bangkok (20/21.00).

Programme B :The lake of Khao Laem and bivouac in the jungle
Day 1: Bangkok / Kanchanaburi / Khao Laem Lake
07.40 Departure by train from the Bangkok Noi railway
station (Thonburi Train Station)
09.40 Arrival at Kanchanaburi. Free time to visit the
city, the military cemetery of the World War II allies, and
the famous bridge of the Kwai River.
10.55 Departure by train from the River Kwai Bridge.
12.50 Arrival at Namtok for lunch.
14.00 Departure by vehicle to reach Thong Pha Phum, then
continuation toward Khao Laem Dam, one of the biggest water
reservoir of the country that provides the capital city in drinking
water and electricity.
18.00 Check-in and rest in a floating house on the lake
of Khao Laem. Dinner and night there. |

Day 2: Khao Laem Lake
/ Bivouac
08.00 After breakfast and an early trip on the lake,
transfer by local vehicle to the camp to see the bathing of
the elephants.
Discovery of the countryside with a trip on board of a cart
pulled by bulls to a Karen village.
Departure for an elephant ride of more than one hour in the
jungle and the mountain.
Upon arrival, get on board of a bamboo raft for a descent of
the river, which is with the exception of some rapids, a great
moment of leisure in the middle of the tropical forest.
12.00 Lunch picnic during the activities. |

14.00 In the afternoon,
stop in a local market for some provisions before continuing
toward the night camp which will be reached after a walk of
3 km in the jungle. Depending on the availability, it will be
possible to spend the night in one of the houses constructed
in the trees, in a bungalow in the jungle, or under camping
tents (no electricity, collective showers).
18.00 Dinner and night on site.

Day 3: Bivouac / Kanchanaburi
07.00 After the early breakfast, hike in the jungle with
discovery of the fauna and rare birds that live in the tropical
vegetation of this region.
11.00 Lunch based of rice and vegetables cooked in bamboos.
12.00 Back toward civilization seated in a plastic raft
for an after-lunch trip.
14.00 Back to Kanchanaburi by vehicle at (17.30), then
Bangkok (20.30) |

Departure every hour from the Bus Terminal in Bangkok at 7:00 AM onward = 100 to 160 Thb depending on the kind of bus.
By train
Departure at 7:35 AM from the Thonburi Railway Station - Bangkok = 28 to 123 Thb (133 km).
Possibility to travel in the luxurious Eastern & Orient Express Train.
By mini-van
Depart from your Hotel in Bangkok at about 6:30 AM and arrive in Kanchanburi at around 8:00 AM where a local guide will await you to start the visit. A stop along the way is also possible at the Damnoern Saduak floating market, a famous site in Thailand even if very crowded with tourists. In that case, the arrival in Kanchanaburi will be at about 10:30 AM.
Info: Bring soap, towel and other personal toilet items, an anti-mosquito lotion, walking shoes, a sweat-shirt or a sweater for the nights in bivouac, a good solar protection, and a sense of adventure!
